Abstract: This data set is a polygon shapefile representing boundaries of the 72 counties in Wisconsin. The data are derived from the U.S. Census Bureau's 1990 TIGER/Line files.

Purpose Description: This data set provides a generalized representation of the 72 counties in Wisconsin. The level of accuracy does not support detailed local analysis.

Process Step Description: Upload of Wisconsin county-level TIGER/Line files and conversion to ARC/INFO format was carried out by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Applied Population Lab (APL) and Land Information & Computer Graphics Facility (LICGF). The coverages were projected from latitude/longitude to WTM. County-level coverages were appended to form Wisconsin statewide coverages. For more information, contact the APL/LICGF.

DNR/GEO received the ARC/INFO coverages from the APL/LICGF. GEO staff used the ARC/INFO DISSOLVE command to create the statewide County Boundaries coverage from the APL/LICGF Minor Civil Divisions coverage. Limited modifications to coverage and item names were made to achieve consistency with other DNR data sets. DNR county number codes were added; several errors in these codes were discovered in 1996 and corrected. The county boundaries polygon shapefile was generated in 1998.
