August 10, 2023 — Racine County

Root River and multiple ponds at this location accessed from County Line Rd. Just east of railroad tracks. Northern edge of Racine County. I spent 3 hours in the river hoping to find a Fawn Darner. I was graced with a brief appearance. The calmness on a late summer afternoon is almost intoxicating.

Common Green Darner (Anax junius)
Observed
Fawn Darner (Boyeria vinosa)
Observed
In the same location I found them last year. One female flew by me low over the water in its characteristic butterfly style flight. She briefly landed on the muddy bank where roots were exposed to oviposit. I saw her two pale spots on the thorax. Her thorax/abdomen brown. I attempted a photo but to no avail.
Shadow Darner (Aeshna umbrosa)
Photographed
One image here of this dragonfly excreting waste.
