New properties in the southwest grasslands ripe for rare plant surveys

June 26, 2015

Two new sites near Mineral Point have been acquired by the Wisconsin DNR as part of the Southwest Grassland and Stream Conservation Area. Although remnant prairies have been identified here, these sites have not been surveyed for rare plants, giving us an excellent opportunity to find some cool plants and provide the property managers with useful information. The very rare prairie forb pale beardtongue (Penstemon pallidus; special concern) has been reported nearby on similar habitat, which makes me think a June survey would be a pretty good idea.
