Pensaukee River Watershed Low-Order Streams
Located near the southern end of Green Bay, the Pensaukee
River watershed contains many productive intermittent streams and wetlands that have never been mapped.
These areas (also called low-order streams) are often overlooked, yet they provide critical habitat for
many aquatic and riparian plant and animal species. Low-order streams also protect and enhance water quality,
control flooding, and maintain groundwater supplies. In 2004, the Wisconsin Department of Natural
Resources (WDNR) received a grant from the Coastal Zone Management Program to enhance awareness of
low-order streams in the Pensaukee River watershed of Oconto and Shawano counties. The focus of the
project was identification and protection of northern pike spawning and nursery habitat. In 2004-05,
WDNR staff mapped and field-verified over 1500 low-order streams in the project area. This information
will be provided to landowners and local officials in an effort to conserve and restore these
intermittent and perennial streams.
