The northern goshawk
(Accipiter gentilis) has attracted substantial interest over the last two decades
because management activities in forest landscapes have the potential to affect nesting habitat, and ultimately
population levels of this species. To investigate this issue, natural resource organizations from across Wisconsin,
Minnesota, and Michigan are partnering to survey 100 blocks within the region for goshawk presence in 2008.
Results from this project will provide data needed to begin assessing if concerns about forest management and
fragmentation are warranted in the western Great Lakes region. Further, this project will provide the first defensible
estimate of goshawk occupancy in the region, which can be used to monitor population trends into the future.
