Lance-tipped Darner (Aeshna constricta)
Netted and released Netted, photographed and released 7 Lance-tipped darners in 77 minutes of surveying. Observed an estimated 12 more specimens. Specimen #4 was the first that exhibited significant cumulative wing damage. Specimen #5 was a female “yellow form” and was the first captured at this site in 2025. It exhibited significant cumulative wing damage. Lance-tipped Darners have been observed by this surveyor as being capable of fast flight, covering a lot of territory quickly. They are also “thorough” flyers, exploring in and out low among reeds at the water’s edge. It is not uncommon that the first sighting of a specimen is from well across the pond, and then being able to track the predictable flight path of the Lance-tipped as it moves along the reeds to where this surveyor eagerly awaits with net ready—and even sometimes being fortunate enough to net the beauty.
