It is a sphagnum bog with two small clear ponds and dotted with spruce and pine trees at the head of the Bad River in the Caroline Lake Preserve. Reach it from Carline Lake Rd by pushing south through several meters of thick woods and brush, which gives way to a fairly dry bog.
Amber-winged Spreadwing (Lestes eurinus)
Observed
couple mating plus at least one more
Boreal Bluet (
Enallagma boreale)
Photographed
there were very many Enallagmas but not sure how many were Boreal and how many were Northern. Based on eyespots and shoulder stripe, they were all one or the other...or Vernal!
Northern Bluet (
Enallagma annexum)
Photographed
I was not concentrating on identifying the Enallagmas so these pictures may not be good enough to support the identifications
Sedge Sprite (Nehalennia irene)
Observed
several
Subarctic Bluet (
Coenagrion interrogatum)
Photographed
a few, including mating pairs
Forcipate Emerald (
Somatochlora forcipata)
Netted and released
on the gravel road, not the bog
Crimson-ringed Whiteface (
Leucorrhinia glacialis)
Photographed
several flying over and around the pond in the bog
