This unnamed Madison park has a pond of possibly half an acre in area. Tall grass and cattails surround the pond. One side is a woodland through which the inlet runs - basically a neighborhood storm water conduit. The park is immediately off of the south side of Old Middleton Road, in Madison.

Common Green Darner (Anax junius)
Observed
Swamp Darner (Epiaeschna heros)
Observed
I watched it through binoculars flying low over the wet inlet ditch that is covered with tall grass, and also up high. I did not get a photo but I saw it well. I saw its blue eyes and mostly dark abdomen, thorax, with light stripes. What stuck out instantly was its size! A common green darner interacted with it, which gave a nice size and color contrast.
Black Saddlebags (Tramea lacerata)
Observed
Common Whitetail (Plathemis lydia)
Observed
Dot-tailed Whiteface (Leucorrhinia intacta)
Observed
Red Saddlebags (Tramea onusta)
Observed
Two were zipping around the pond. I can't rule out Carolina saddlebags because I never saw them perched, but based on photos I have taken in this area of perched red Tramea sp, they are almost always reds.
Twelve-spotted Skimmer (Libellula pulchella)
Observed
Widow Skimmer (Libellula luctuosa)
Observed
Azure Bluet (Enallagma aspersum)
Observed
I realize now that there are numerous individuals of this species at this pond, but only occasionally do I see them in the grass along the path. With binoculars today I could see many azure bluets skimming over the water surface.
Eastern Forktail (Ischnura verticalis)
Observed
Amber-winged Spreadwing (Lestes eurinus)
Photographed
I have never seen this species before - got wet getting a photo that I hope is definitive! I believe it is new for Dane County.
