Named for its very wide club, the skillet clubtail varies in its body length from 1.9 to 2.1 inches. The body is green-yellow with black thoracic stripes and black legs. The abdomen and club are black with yellow markings. Clubtail species are very similar to each other in some aspects, careful inspection is needed to identify them.
Description of Habitat/Range:
Rare throughout northeastern United States and southeastern Canada, this species prefers small to large turbid rivers with at least a partly mud bottom but good water quality. Sometimes it can be found at clean lakes with sand or sand-marl (calcium-rich) bottoms. The skillet clubtail is widely distributed in northern Wisconsin, although not necessarily in abundant numbers.
Flight Season:
Late May to mid-August in Wisconsin.
