This stocky yellow-green dragonfly, with black shoulder markings, varies in length from 1.7 to 1.8 inches. The male's abdomen is almost entirely black with small yellow markings. The female's abdomen is similar but the end is edged with yellow. Clubtail species are very similar to each other in some aspects; careful inspection is needed to identify them.
Common throughout eastern United States and southeastern Canada, this species is usually found at medium to large rapid streams, rivers, windswept lakes and ponds with rocky shores. It is widely distributed throughout northern two-thirds of Wisconsin.
Late May to mid-August in Wisconsin.
